How to redact a screenshot

  1. Open your image. Choose a PNG, JPEG, or WebP, drop it into the editor, or paste an image from your clipboard. You can try a fictional example first.
  2. Cover private details. Keep Blackout selected for sensitive text. Draw a rectangle over the whole detail, including the edges. Use the coordinate controls if you prefer a keyboard.
  3. Review and export. Check names, addresses, account details, browser tabs, and notifications. Download a PNG or copy the edited image. Share the exported copy.

Blackout or blur: which should you use?

Blackout replaces the selected pixels with a solid color in the exported image. Use it for passwords, API keys, contact details, account numbers, and text that must be removed. The PNG contains the edited pixels, without an editable redaction layer.

Blur changes the appearance of an area while keeping information from the original pixels. It can be useful for background clutter, but blurred text may still be readable or recoverable. Choose blackout for confidential information.

Prepare screenshots for support, documentation, and demos

Keep the error message or interface visible while removing the customer details around it. For a tutorial, cover account names and private tabs. For a support ticket, hide credentials and identifying information while leaving the steps needed to reproduce the issue.

This editor works on an image you already have. For logs or copied messages, use the free sensitive text cleaner. To protect a page during a recording, read how to record tutorials without leaking personal information.

Frequently asked questions

Is this screenshot redactor really free?

Yes. There is no account, payment, watermark, or export quota. File and image-size limits keep editing manageable in the browser.

Are my screenshots uploaded?

No. The editor opens and edits the image locally in your browser tab. The tool does not send your image to a server or save it in browser storage. Normal website analytics do not include your image or filename.

Can I undo a blackout?

You can undo edits while the image is open in this editor. The downloaded PNG has the blackout flattened into its pixels, so there is no hidden layer to remove. Your original file remains unchanged.

Does it automatically find sensitive text?

This screenshot tool uses manual selection. It does not scan images for text or guarantee that every private detail has been covered. Review the full image before sharing.

Can I use it on a phone?

Yes. Choose an image from your device and draw regions with a finger, or use the coordinate controls. Clipboard image support depends on your browser; PNG download is the alternative.

Can I redact a PDF or video?

This editor accepts still PNG, JPEG, and WebP images. It does not edit PDFs, video, or live screen shares.
